Can Your Crack Be Repaired?
Windshield repair works by injecting a clear resin into a chip or crack, filling the void and bonding the glass back together. It restores structural integrity, prevents the damage from spreading, and โ when done well โ restores near-original optical clarity.
But repair has limits. Here's the general framework shops use to decide whether a crack qualifies for repair or requires replacement.
Length
Most shops will repair cracks up to 6 inches in length. Some technicians using newer equipment can successfully repair cracks up to 12 inches, but results vary. Longer cracks have more stress points, flex more with temperature changes, and are harder to inject consistently โ full replacement is the more reliable solution.
Depth
A windshield has two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer (PVB) between them. Repair is viable when only the outer glass layer is cracked. If the crack penetrates through the interlayer to the inner glass โ or if the PVB layer is visible or damaged โ replacement is necessary.
Location
Location matters as much as size. Cracks in the following areas typically require replacement:
- Driver's line of sight: Even a repaired crack can leave slight optical distortion, which is a safety and legal issue in the primary viewing zone
- Edge cracks: Cracks that extend to within 2 inches of the windshield edge compromise the structural bond and can propagate rapidly
- ADAS camera zone: The area directly behind the rearview mirror mounting point, where forward-facing cameras sit โ repair may leave resin residue that interferes with camera function
Age
Fresh cracks repair better than old ones. Over time, dirt, moisture, and debris work into the crack, contaminating the void that resin needs to fill cleanly. A crack that has been open for more than a few days โ especially if the car has been washed or driven in rain โ may be too contaminated for a quality repair.
What Does Windshield Crack Repair Cost?
Professional crack repair typically costs $50โ$150, compared to $200โ$500+ for full replacement. Most insurance policies cover chip and crack repair at no cost to you โ no deductible, no claim impact in most states โ because preventing a crack from spreading is cheaper for the insurer than paying for replacement later.
Call your insurer before paying out of pocket for any repair. You may owe nothing.
DIY Repair Kits: Are They Worth It?
Hardware store windshield repair kits ($10โ$20) can stabilize small chips and prevent further spreading, but their results are cosmetically inferior to professional repair. The resin quality and injection pressure achievable with consumer kits can't match professional-grade equipment. For a chip in a non-critical area where cosmetic result doesn't matter, they're fine. For any crack near the driver's line of sight or longer than 2 inches, get a professional to look at it.
The Risk of Delaying
A small crack that could have been repaired for $60 this week may grow into a full-windshield replacement by next month. Temperature swings, car wash pressure, road vibration, and even slamming the door can propagate existing cracks. If you see a new chip or crack, schedule an assessment within a few days.
